What interior door installation costs

Interior doors are priced per door, with the door itself on the materials line and the labor set by whether it is a slab or a prehung unit. One door is a visit. Four or more on one floor brings the per door labor down because the setup and the cleanup happen once. The written estimate carries the real number for your opening.

What moves the price

  • Slab or prehung is the biggest fork. A slab reuses your jamb and takes under an hour when the frame is square. A prehung door means the old jamb comes out, the new one gets shimmed plumb and the casing is replaced on both sides.
  • The door you pick sets the materials line. A hollow core six panel costs a fraction of a solid core shaker, and a solid core door takes longer to hang because it weighs three times as much.
  • Odd sizes cost more than standard ones. Older Baltimore County and DC houses have openings that no stock door fits, so the door gets cut down or ordered, and the estimate says which.
  • Paint is its own step. Doors that arrive primed get two coats on the horses before they go on the hinges, which is a second short visit.

Cost questions

Can you reuse my frame?
If the jamb is square and the hinges are not pulling loose, yes. We hold a level on the hinge side at the estimate and tell you. A frame that is racked more than a quarter inch over its height gets a prehung door instead, because a slab in a crooked frame never latches right.
Do you supply the doors?
Either way. Most people have us pick them up because we know which stock sizes fit. If you buy your own, we tell you the exact size and swing to order before you pay for it.
How many doors can you hang in a day?
Six to eight slabs on square frames, or four prehung units with casing. A whole floor of a Columbia or Ashburn house is usually one long day plus a short paint visit.
