What baseboard and crown molding cost

Trim is priced by the room and the profile, with the lumber on the materials line. A basement that lost its baseboard to a flood is one visit per hundred feet or so, plus paint. Crown is slower than base because every cut is compound and every corner is coped, so a room of crown is a day. The estimate shows the footage and the profile.

What moves the price

  • Profile and material. A stock three and a quarter inch primed pine or MDF base is cheap. A tall five and a quarter inch colonial base or a stain grade oak crown changes both the lumber and the labor.
  • Corners. A square room with four corners is quick. A room with bay windows, bump outs, a fireplace and a sloped ceiling has three times the cuts and the price follows.
  • Walls that are not straight. Plaster walls in older Baltimore County and Arlington houses bow, so the trim gets scribed and the gaps caulked, which takes longer than new drywall.
  • Paint. We prime and paint trim on the horses before it goes up and touch up after, or we leave it primed for your painter, and the estimate shows both ways if you ask.

Cost questions

MDF or wood for baseboard?
Primed finger joint pine or poplar on anything near a floor that could get wet again, because MDF swells. MDF is fine for crown and for base in dry upstairs rooms, and it paints a little smoother.
Can you match the existing baseboard in the rest of the house?
Stock profiles from the last thirty years, yes, the same week. Older or odd profiles get matched from a sample, either a close stock piece or a custom run, and we show you the match before we buy the lumber.
Do you paint the trim or do I?
Either. Most people have us do it because trim painted on the horses before it goes up looks better than trim cut in on the wall. If you have a painter coming, we leave it primed, filled and caulked.
